ESSENTIAL OIL The term "Essential" is applied to these oils because they contain the essence or fragrant part of the plant. The word Essence which equates to spirit was coined by Paracelsus (1493-1541), the alchemist. Spirit is the personality or extract of something that retains the qualities of the original substance. Essential oils are also referred to as the "life force" or "blood" of the plant.
Scientifically, Essential oils are complex mixtures of naturally occurring chemicals that have a multi-faceted role within the plant.
EVENING PRIMROSE OIL is the oil from the seed of the plant known as evening primrose. It contains high amounts of essential fatty acids of which GLA, is the main active compound. The two most important actions of EFAs are related to their roles in the structures of membranes and in the synthesis of a wide variety of derivatives that regulate numerous aspects of cellular activity. The anti-inflammatory effect of evening primrose oil has been studied extensively in relation to skin disorders. Also, essential fatty acids are involved in maintaining the integrity of the water impermeability barrier of the skin.
